When a leading clean energy certifier set aggressive product portfolio expansion targets, it quickly became clear that building the required development capability in-house wasn’t feasible — and that finding the right partner would be critical.
Our client operates across more than 140 countries, helping thousands of organisations produce, trade and consume clean assets in support of a sustainable economy. A significant spike in demand and investment had accelerated its growth ambitions.
What it needed was a partner with genuine development capability across heavily regulated markets, and the flexibility to scale resource up and down across all disciplines, from product management and quality assurance (QA) to engineering, deployment and operations.
Design
Following a thorough analysis of the current state across the product development team, five key objectives were identified:
1. Swift deployment of QA and DevOps capability through a Capability-as-a-Service (CaaS) model, building blended teams with cross-fertilised capability, continuity, consistency and cultural alignment
2. Introduction of a QA strategy and roadmap, covering approach, ways of working and automation testing capabilities and tools
3. Creation of a DevOps strategy and implementation of proactive monitoring tool
4. Injection of specialist Amazon Web Services (AWS) capability and approach
5. Supporting and driving the evolution of continuous deployment cycles and iterative releases
Deliver
Through its CaaS model, Definia deployed multiple development squads within five working days, with an initial focus on three priorities: enhancing the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), introducing specialist DevOps capability and launching a defined QA strategy across the product development functions.
Key outcomes included:
- A threefold increase in velocity and quality across the product development lifecycle, achieved by integrating closely with the client’s existing development pods in the UK
- Further development of the operating model, organisational design and SDLC processes in collaboration with the Leadership Team
- A move towards a CI/CD (continuous integration and continuous deployment) model, delivering faster releases, improved collaboration, higher code stability and increased scalability
