From outage to opportunity: Technology assessment for a leading car parts supplier

Define
A nationwide car parts supplier’s technology function had become a pressing concern following a significant network outage that resulted in substantial revenue loss. Its network set-up posed a critical single point of failure — with no backup or contingency in place.
The business urgently needed an experienced partner to conduct a thorough IT health-check to:
- Examine the existing network infrastructure, including the incumbent provider, with a secondary focus on security measures
- Deliver a comprehensive recommendation roadmap to fortify the network infrastructure, enhance security measures and establish a resilient IT framework to support its ambitious growth plans.
Design
Definia’s Lead Principal Associate carried out an in-depth assessment of the IT organisation, covering:
- IT strategy, including roadmap creation and evolution aligned to organisational priorities
- IT Service Management Framework, including communication tooling and techniques
- People development and capability, including knowledge transfer and coaching
We conducted a desktop exercise and interview process, assessing 15 areas and controls across the overall IT environment. This identified several key layers requiring enhancement or replacement to ensure future stability, scalability and security. These included branch network resilience, MAM application performance and reliability, workplace environment and security and governance.
Deliver
We produced a comprehensive report summarising interview feedback, health-check findings, key recommendations and a roadmap to address the priority areas of vulnerability and concern.
During the technology assessment, natural groupings of initiatives emerged across core themes. From this, an 18-month roadmap was created, with Definia retained to manage three critical projects:
- 1. Creating a secure modern workplace | Assessing the tools and technologies used across email, documents, communications and devices, to create a secure, modernised environment that boosts productivity
- 2. Securing data management | Managing data security whilst enabling collaboration and accessibility within a consistent single environment, including resilience and recovery of data using modern backup tools
- 3. Fostering a resilient environment | Reviewing the main connectivity and network infrastructure to ensure a secure, resilient, scalable and cost-effective environment; reducing single points of weakness, addressing incidents observed in prior years and re-focusing the IT organisation on value-add activities
